Andrea Branzi

Andrea Branzi

Andrea Branzi was involved with Memphis primarily via his friendship with Sottsass. Long involved with radical design and a veteran of several earlier collective groups, he saw Memphis as the latest maneuver within an ongoing conceptual project. He theorized that by the 1980s, capitalist culture had reached a state of crisis – “the end of the myth of progress, which transforms time into a linear function, where everything changes continually,” as he put it. In retrospect his ideas seem to anticipate our own experience of the internet, and also to have been a powerful interpretation of Memphis itself. In its seeming superficiality, he saw great critical depth.
